On Wednesday, September 18, a working session was held at Yuverta Houten for the participants in the PRO Biodiversity research project. In this project, restoration measures for biodiversity are applied to 13 pre-vocational and secondary VET education school sites, spread throughout the Netherlands.
Looking through the eyes of an insect
The working session with the theme ‘Biodiversity in construction and management’ took place at the Yuverta Park in Houten. There, 20 teachers and employees from 10 different pre-vocational and secondary VET schools started working on an evaluation of the site, during which they learned to look ‘through the eyes of an insect’ to find out what could still be improved in the habitat of this insect, and how you could translate this to the schoolyard. Viewing the site from different perspectives helps to optimize design and management aimed at increasing biodiversity.
The design process of a biodiverse school site
In addition, the participants received advice from experts on the construction and maintenance of a herb-rich grassland, and on the various aspects of the design process of a biodiverse school site. Not only construction and design were discussed, but also how to create support from schools and to make the link with education.
VET students participate in scientific research
In the PRO Biodiversity project, pre-vocational and secondary VET students participate in scientific research into the effect of biodiversity measures and directly help to increase biodiversity on their own school grounds. Inquiry-based learning plays a major role in this. Yuverta is participating in this project through the Green Liveable City practorate at the Yuverta locations Utrecht, Houten, Heerlen and Valkenburg.
