Green Livable City Practorate Translates Scientific Knowledge Into Practice

2 minute read

The Green Liveable City Practorate was launched in May 2021, and is led by Heidi Kamerling. The practorate is part of Yuverta and connected to the Dutch Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) on Urban Greening. The initiative stemmed from the network of higher education (lecturers, researchers) and the business community. In addition to Heidi Kamerling, the practorate consists of three teachers-researchers.

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice

A practorate is a knowledge platform and consists of a principal investigator (practor) and a knowledge circle, in which students, lecturers and specialists work together to conduct applied practical research into innovation and improvements in vocational education and training. In addition, a practorate serves as a connecting link for translating scientific research into practice.

Climate-Proof Cities

In the coming years, our cities will take on a completely different look. To make cities more climate-proof, the design of urban areas is increasingly focusing on green, blue (water management), biodiversity and circularity. As a result, another demand arises in the green labor market. The Green Liveable City Practorate wants to prepare students, teachers and professionals for this by strengthening the connection between practice, research and education. In this context, the practorate functions as a platform for applied practical research – for example in the form of a ‘living lab’ – and expertise development, in collaboration with the network of the Green Hotspot.

Showcase Session on Explorative Learning

On behalf of the Dutch CoVE and the practorate, Heidi Kamerling hosted an open lecture on the topic of Explorative Learning on Tuesday December 6th. This open lecture is part of  our project’s ‘Showcase Sessions’ to exchange knowledge, skills and expertise.

When vocational education and training (VET) students are able to conduct research by themselves on a practical level, the will be better equipped to cope with the changes and challenges of the future.
