Official Opening of the Green Roof Experience Centre

On Tuesday, October 8, the Green Roof Experience Centre annex demonstration and training facility for Green Rooftops and Vertical Gardens was officially opened in the school garden of Yuverta Houten. On the roof, (pre) VET students and trainees can learn in real-time how to install and maintain sustainable green roofs and facades.

11 Types of Rooftop Gardens on One Single Roof

What started in 2020 as an idea for a green roof on a bicycle shed, has grown into a true Green Roof Experience Centre where the latest knowledge and innovations in the field of roof and facade greenery have been applied. On the two-metre-high roof, or rather the roof simulation, there is a central path with several roof gardens measuring three by three meters on both sides.

On one side of the roof, students learn to create roof gardens, on the other side they learn about the maintenance of the gardens. On the maintenance side, the five most common gardens have been constructed, which differ in how much maintenance they require. There is a sloping roof with sedum, a herb roof, a garden with perennials, a garden with raised containers including lighting, and a roof garden with bee and butterfly attracting vegetation. The sedum roof was built on the side of the cycle path, so that passers-by can also see that sedum can be used on a sloping roof.

Facade Greenery And Technology

Eight different systems with facade greenery have been placed against the concrete walls between which the roof is built. In this way, for example, half of a group of students can work on the facade greenery during class, while the other half works on the roof. The plan still includes the installation of a dummy solar panel, an idea that emerged from collaboration with the National Roof Plan, so that students can also learn how to work around a solar panel, what effect the heat of the panel has on the vegetation and with what safety measures they should take into account to prevent fire and short circuit.

Building the Education of the Future Together

The Green Roof Experience Center is an initiative of the Green Liveable City Hotspot of Yuverta, the European Platform for Urban Greening and various partners, including the Royal Ginkel Group. The financing and realization of the roof is co-funded by Erasmus+.
