The metro map serves as a visual scale platform for the trainings of urban greening and as the basis for an innovative curriculum. The learner can follow the different lines of the metro map and stop at the stops to learn more skills for the future of greening.
During the European Platform for Urban Greening project we created an innovative curriculum with learning outcomes and assessment criteria. We also collected trainings on the topic of urban greening from our partners in all over Europe. In this way we have mapped the state of the training in the European platform and at the same time identified the skills needs of the green sector for the future.
After the mapping exercise, we will consider how to bring together all the existing trainings in a way that is visible to all and how the trainings can form an innovative curriculum. We needed a visual tool to make all the information visible. This is where the idea of the metro map became clearer.
The metro map brings together existing (and emerging) training and courses along their own lines, by theme. The themes of the lines are familiar from the innovative curriculum: Water, Soil/Substrates, Vegetation, Materials, Energy Saving/Machinery and Wellbeing. For each line, learning outcomes have been created to guide the content of courses and training. (You can see the learning outcomes here.)
These lines have different stops where learner can find training, courses and materials according to the theme of the stop. This allows the learner to explore the training courses according to their own preferences and needs – either by following one line or by deviating between the stops on the different lines.
We also used the idea of a metro map to navigate the virtual vertical learning environment. Each of the stops on the metro map in the virtual learning environment has its own theme in the vertical green. (Read more about the learning environment here.) At the Green Days Congress and Expo 2023, we used the metro map to visualise the training modules and as a basis for opening a discussion with professionals and students in the green sector.
