Dive Into the World of the Soil Food Web with an Online Course

2 minute read

In Finland, AhlmanEdu is working on an online course that introduces the world of the soil food web. The online course is suitable for anyone working with soil, whether you are a green professional or just interested in nature and its principles. The course is due to be launched in autumn 2024.

At AhlmanEdu, we have over the years organised lectures, courses and workshops on the soil food web method and tested the method in our green spaces. However, we also wanted to provide basic information on soil food webs for those who want to learn about the topic, regardless of time and place. So we are working on an online course on the subject, which is currently being tested and developed. The content of the course will be tested over the summer with representatives of the project partners. The course should be available for purchase in autumn 2024.

The online material will support the hands on workshops and methodology, and will complement the food web course. It will serve as a basic course for the whole package, which can later be deepened through on-site workshops. This process of identifying and creating learning contexts and combining different learning methods has also been an essential part of the objectives of the European Platform for Urban Greening.

Online course provides basic information on the soil food web method

The Soil Food Web aims to restore soil functions to a natural balance, where the soil’s own biology manages nutrient cycling. The method was developed by Dr. Elaine Ingham, an American soil biologist and ecologist, and we at AhlmanEdu have studied and applied the method in northern conditions. Dora Tkalec, a certified soil nutrient network consultant from AhlmanEdu, is the expert and trainer of the online course.

The online course is for anyone who wants to learn about soil microorganisms and how to use them in soil management. The course provides a basic understanding of soil food web functioning and bioactive composting, which is an essential part of the soil food web approach.

The course material is divided into five thematic sections containing lectures. The course is fully self-paced and self-directed using the web-based Moodle platform. This delivery method is part of blended learning methodologies and lifelong learning. The aim is to create a course that can be attended with a low threshold. In this way, green professionals and businesses will also have a better opportunity to update their knowledge and learn new things – while working.

So, are you ready to understand how soil works and make better decisions about soil and plant management? More information coming in the autumn.
