Smart Irrigation: A Practical Teaching Tool

2 minute read

Water scarcity in the landscape and global warming is a challenge that the Earth's current population has to cope with. We believe that even small practical actions by individuals can contribute to the overall improvement of the climate conditions in which we live. That's why we start with ourselves.

The founding partners of the Czech Center of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) on Urban Greening,  ITTEC and the Secondary Agricultural School & Agricultural College, Benešov, together built a smart irrigation system on the school grounds. The irrigation is controlled fully automatically based on data collected from sensors and radar and uses rainwater that is collected in a tank located 4.5 metres deep.

The whole installation will not only save irrigation water significantly, but will also serve as a practical tool for teaching students and participants in lifelong learning courses on urban water management. Students will experience on their own how to build and use a smart irrigation system and, as a follow-up, how to design and technically solve the irrigation system in AutoCAD.
