New Handbook Provides Impact Assessment Framework for Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Areas

1 minute read

A collaborative effort by several EU H2020 funded projects working on the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS), including the Urban GreenUP project, has resulted in a new handbook providing an impact assessment framework.

Handbook for Practitioners

The book sets out a methodology to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the impact of nature-based solutions, through a set of indicators, covering areas such as climate resilience, health and well-being and new economic opportunities and green jobs.

The handbook is intended for key players involved in nature-based solutions uptake, such as policy makers, urban planners, the scientific community, industry, non-governmental organisations and civil society.

Urban GreenUP’s nature-based solutions cover a variety of complementary yet interconnected aspects of urban life and infrastructures. They are grouped into four main categories:

  1. re-naturing urbanization;
  2. water interventions;
  3. singular green infrastructures;
  4. non-technical interventions.

Examples include the deployment of green bike and pedestrian routes, the installation of parks and urban farming facilities, the usage of smart soils and bio pollutant filters, as well as the implementation of sustainable drainage systems, which reduce the impact of floods and for irrigation purposes.
