National Championship ‘Tegelwippen’ (Tiles Lifting) in the Netherlands

1 minute read

Who gets the most stonework in the city removed and replaced with green? Aldermen and mayors can register their municipality for the national championships ‘tiles lifting’: Paving out, green in.

This initiative is a fun action to make Dutch gardens more climate-proof and to promote biodiversity – together with the inhabitants/citizens.

Active stakeholders are local and regional authorities such as municipalities, with support from Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, and Amsterdam Rainproof among others.

Every citizen can participate by replacing tiles with greenery in their own (vertical) garden. So you can too! Simply enter your number of tilted tiles in an online form and they will be added to the amount of your municipality.

Green instead of pavement: the advantages

Less pavement in urban areas has many advantages. If rainwater falls on planted soil instead of pavement, it gets directly absorbed into the soil and does not need to be drained through the sewer. This helps mitigating flooding during extreme rainfall.
