Mapping the Green in the City

1 minute read

How green is Amsterdam? With the Green Monitor the municipality of Amsterdam maps out how much greenery there is in the city and what that greenery consists of.

The Green Monitor not only looks at public space, but also at gardens and roofs in the city. Greenery in the city can take many forms, from large city parks and rooftop gardens, to green facades and tiny backyards in the neighborhood.

Green Monitor Amsterdam

Thanks to the Green Monitor, for the first time we have a good idea of how green Amsterdam actually is. 61% of the public space in Amsterdam is green, 15% of the entire city is covered by trees and 39% of the gardens consist of greenery. Nine out of ten Amsterdam residents live within a ten-minute walk of a green area.

Grey vs Green

61% of public space seems like a lot, but it is still far from enough. In many neighborhoods the public space consists of grey ‘stonified’ areas and this immediately causes problems in wet and hot weather. This certainly also applies to stonified gardens and non-green roofs. In the coming years, the municipality of Amsterdam therefore aims to work together with residents to green the city even more.
