Cluj-Napoca, Where Students and Festival-Goers Plant Trees

2 minute read

Cluj-Napoca is well on its way to becoming the first sustainable city in Romania, with many green initiatives, their intention to make all public transport (including taxis) electric or hybrid by 2026 and, most importantly, several public initiatives to plant trees in new parks and new forests in the city and province.

A New Tree for Every Good Exam Result

The Faculty of Political Science (FSPAC) at Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, for example, promised to plant a tree for every student who achieved a good result in the winter exams. In doing so, they joined the #Teamtrees project, which has already planted 20 million trees worldwide.

You might think that this would result in a few dozen trees, but the students really made an effort for the environment and for their grades. As a result, 507 trees are going to be planted, paid for by the university, for a total of 3,000 students. The Babeș-Bolyai University  communication department stated:

‘Every 10 out of 10 means a new tree. Thank you for your efforts, not only for your own personal and professional development, but also for supporting an idea we all believe in. The world is getting a little better thanks to you and you should be proud of that.’

The university also invited the students to plant the trees near Cluj-Napoca. It is not the first time that the university has involved their students in environmentally friendly activities. Two years ago, they planted 150 pine trees in Babeș Park, Cluj-Napoca. The faculty’s alpine club also helped the local government plant a forest in 2013, which they renamed the FSPAC forest.

More Green Initiatives in Cluj

This project is just one of many initiatives in Cluj Province.  The university’s administration announced that it wants to make their carbon footprint as small as possible and is even looking for solutions to make the cafeteria plastic-free as soon as possible.

Last year, Electric Castle, one of Romania’s most important festivals, planted one million trees together with the government. Another 100,000 new trees will be planted in March, thanks to an initiative sponsored by local shopkeepers. If you add to that the fact that Cluj-Napoca’s main landfill and rubbish dump, Pata Rât, was cleaned up last year, the future looks bright in Cluj.
