EFA la Malvesía Promotes Valencian Agriculture With Traditional Horticultural Varieties

2 minute read

EFA La Malvesía school (Valencia, Spain) has launched a project to disseminate Valencian autochthonous species. The project aims to promote the cultivation and consumption of horticultural varieties that have traditionally been cultivated on our lands for centuries and that in recent decades have been replaced by commercial varieties, more productive and adapted to the demands of the current market. However, traditional varieties represent an invaluable genetic, historical and cultural heritage. At the same time, they are ideal varieties to grow in organic farms due to their greater resistance to certain agents and adverse conditions. With all this, they are ideal candidates to implant in school and social gardens.

These gardens are a great tool to connect people with nature and awaken the vocation for “green”, while giving us the opportunity to educate in values and introduce well-being and biodiversity in urban centres, objectives also pursued by the European Platform for Urban Greening.

EFA la Malvesía has seedlings and seeds available to educational centres and citizens interested in traditional Valencian varieties. Likewise, it collaborates weekly with a primary school by offering activities in the school garden, where the varieties of yesteryear have been successfully introduced.

Along with this activity around school gardens, other activities of interest stand out in the project, such as guided visits to an ecological garden where traditional varieties are made known first-hand, accompanied by tastings of freshly collected seasonal products (Km 0).

In addition, informative material has been created for social networks and the web consisting of podcasts and videos that collect agronomic information and culinary recipes around traditional Valencian varieties.
